Who can participate in the King of the Mountain Race?
Anyone can race! The course provides a great challenge for all abilities. Even if you are not a competitive racer and just like to get out and enjoy the ride, this will be one you don’t want to miss.
How do I pre-register?
Pre-register for $25. Riders can register online. If registering in person on the day of the event, please allow 10-15 minutes to check-in at the registration table to receive your number, and T-shirt (if ordered).
Can I register on race day?
Yes, Registration on Race Day will open at 11:00 AM and stay open until races begin at noon. Please note that Race Day registration is $30.
Are there entry fee refunds?
There are no entry fee refunds, regardless of the circumstances.
What type of bike can I ride?
Just about anything you want, road bike, mountain bikes, single speeds, recumbents, and tandems are all welcome to ride.
What clothing should I wear?
This is a personal matter and will also depend on the weather conditions on race day. The temperature at the fire hall may range 10-20 degrees from where you live, look on weather.com to see what the local weather says the evening before race day.
Where would a good place be for my friends to watch?
The parking lot across from the starting point is good, then they can drive up the hill and pass you as you’re going up. Then they can park at the top of the hill, well off the road, and carefully watch.
Are there bathrooms on-site?
Yes. Bathrooms will be available for riders and guests.
When will the race start and how is the race conducted?
The race begins from Lawrence Township Volunteer Fire Company #1; The 5-mile race will start at 12 PM with a staggered start; riders start every 30 seconds. The exact number and timing will be determined by the total number of racers.
Is the course open to vehicle traffic?
Yes, the public roads are open to vehicle traffic. The rules of the road will apply, i.e. stay on the right-hand side of the road. We have local Fire-Police and/or race staff at the few crossroads. The shoulder for much of the course is 6 ft wide.
Is this race difficult?
Yes, it is nearly all uphill, but many of our riders take it slow and steady. There are no flat sections to rest. Our fastest record is just over 16 minutes; our longest time is two hours. Most racers finish between 20-35 minutes.
Can I have extra clothing brought up to the summit?
Yes, you can bring a bag up to the finish, before the race. Please make sure your name is on the bag. King of the Mountain Race and Habitat for Humanity of Clearfield County are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
What will the post-race scene look like?
King of the Mountain is a family atmosphere, and there will be plenty of room for you and the family to hang out post-race as we enjoy lunch together. There is an awards ceremony and food is provided.
Will the race organizers provide me with a ride back to the Fire Hall?
No, but the entire trip is downhill and easily done on one's bicycle. Please be careful at the Zion Road intersection - you could be going as fast as 40 mph and there is a sewer grate to avoid which will be marked with a traffic cone.
Can I donate to the Habitat for Humanity without racing?
Habitat for Humanity accepts donations all year. It is through the generosity of individuals like you and organizations that we are able to build houses. Please visit our website to see how you can get involved.
